The Nest

With its sleek design and touch screen interface, the "Nest" learning thermostat aims to revolutionize home heating and cooling, and lower energy bills.

"If you look at most of the thermostats that are on walls today, they look like 90's beige box computers...what we've done is brought a little bit of magic to it and said maybe you should think about this thing very differently," said Nest President and CEO Tony Fadell.

The "Nest" isn't just hip, with glowing colors and built in wi-fi -- over time, it actually "determines" comfort levels.

"Just turn it up and turn it down, live your life, and it learns your patterns, and replays it back to you, so you don't have to program it," said Nest co-founder Matt Rogers.

Click wheel technology made sense to Rogers and Fadell, former Apple executives who helped develop the iPod.

They felt the thermostat was due for an overhaul: it's easy to ignore, yet controls 50 percent of a home's energy use, which can be $1,000 a year in a typical home.

"Currently, my thermostat is at 62 and I have a leaf up, I'm conserving.." said Rogers.

Advanced features like the "leaf" help people save money.

"The leaf shows up relative to what you normally like. So if you like 72 degrees in a cooling season, the leaf will show up at 73 or 74..just to nudge you slightly out of your comfort zone," explained Fadell.

It's got the look and certainly has the technology, but how user-friendly is the
Nest? One of the first homeowners to try it out said after a month, it's as easy to use as any Apple product.
